Study Warns Against Choosing Plastic Surgeons on Instagram

A study published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal noted that it is difficult to determine if advertised posts on Instagram come from board-certified surgeons.

Certified Posts

While many licensed professionals use Instagram and other sites to promote their work, a majority of non-certified individuals also use the platform, according to Clark Schierle, the study’s senior author. The research based its findings on more than one million social media posts on January 9 in the US and Canada. It showed that only 17.8% of cosmetic surgery-related posts were advertised by legitimate professionals.

By legitimate, it meant these posts came from professionals certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. These individuals have ample experience in providing cosmetic services, whether it is Juvederm in Utah or Botox in California.

Health Guarantee

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery requires any physician to have at least five years of training and experience in surgical procedures, prior to gaining a certification. The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada also imposes a similar rule.

Schierle believes that patients should only work with certified surgeons to avoid complications. He also mentioned that some of these have been evident in horror stories about botched operations involving unlicensed individuals who used silicone material.

Instagram has allowed many people to express themselves in a digital platform. It is not surprising that medical professionals use it as well to promote their practice, but patients should be aware that there are unscrupulous people who take advantage of uninformed users. As such, you must be extra careful if you still decide to use social media sites to find a plastic surgeon.
